Deer Hunting – From Deer to Turkeys

  Watching turkeys

The snow finally melted down so today I took a walk through the woods to my deer blind; to see what winter damage has been done to the little shack where I spend so much time. Stepping over a log I heard a sound coming from behind a pine tree. One slow step followed by another; until I was right beside the tree but Hen Turkeystill couldn’t see what had made the noise. I made a mistake when I walked back here without my camera today because I had no idea what I was walking up on this time. Just then with a loud clatter two tom turkeys and who knows how many hens decided I was right in the path of where they wanted to go. Have you ever got ran over by 10 or 15 turkeys? I’m here to tell you it isn’t a pretty site seeing them come after you. Michigan’s turkey hunting has come a long ways since days when we were young. I remember seeing one or two but there wasn’t any seasons in this area. Now days the prospect of seeing a bearded turkey is a pretty good bet; getting him in your sights is another thing. Wild turkeys have an ability of evading hunters that most of us hunters like to think isn’t possible. Calling toms in is an essential part of any turkey hunt. I have tried several things to get pictures of turkeys over years of watching I have used a mirror to watch old tom turkeys strutting in front of their own image. Last year I used a man decoy that I purchased from http://www.procshuntinbuddy.com/ . If you like sitting outdoors where you are in an open area this is an item you should try. It’s professionally made so it is more lifelike than just putting a shirt & a pair of pants against a tree, like we have all done. I sat this beside a big tree with a black cameral size box around its neck on a cord.  It sat there for two weeks before I replaced it one day with myself. These are pictures of some of these birds that came past that day. Last fall this worked great in my bow blind too. We all have taken an old shirt or pants to leave in our stand to make it look like something is there; so it looks more Wild Turkeynatural when we are sitting in our spot. This actually is lifelike & from testing this product I have to say it works great. It is not season here yet but I have heard reports that it has been a very good year in other states. Some people have sent in pictures & very interesting stories, like this one that was posted on April 1st http://louisiana.huntography.com/blog/2012/04/07/april-fools-day-visitor/ .
More stories of long beard turkeys are filling magazines: with many great stories that are sure to catch your interest if you are a turkey hunter like me. Be sure to have your big Dutch oven ready because you are going to want to slow roast this big bird with your favorite seasonings. For us it is our favorite Cajun spices that go into our cooking pot. Be sure to give these products a try this year. Trying new things & testing new products is what most of us really like when we are planning out a new outdoor adventure.

Deer Hunting – Huntography

Huntography

Being a sportsman or sportswoman means you are a person that loves being outdoors. Not just being outdoors but being a part of what Whitetail Bucknature has to offer. So often we are labeled by anti hunters as heathens & barbaric people that do not care about anything but butchering wild animals. They just don’t realize that hunting goes way beyond the aspect of taking an animal’s life. Some things we do as sportsman or sportswoman for conservation purposes make positive effects on wildlife habitat for many years. To get better views of conservation & how hunting is actually done we are taking to video cameras to show everyone we are not the barbaric non caring people most anti hunters think we are.
Last week we came across a blog that is doing just that. To my surprise a friend of mine is managing Editor for http://louisiana.huntography.com/  In this blog you will find great hunting videos with links to recipes & many other stories from bow hunting to fishing. Huntography is becoming more popular because there are always new & exciting adventures around every corner, behind every tree & over every hill.
